A little about me
Hi everyone! My name is Keli Totten, and I am the owner of The Sweetest Things Cake Shoppe. Caking is my passion in life. Building this business is a dream come true, and I can't wait to see where the coming year take us! I am blessed with a very sweet and loving husband that supports my cake dreams, and 6 amazing kids that take up our free time. Our life is full of adventures. Here is a little more about me:
How did you get started in baking and designing cakes?
I had always wanted to learn cake decorating, and so for Christmas one year my parents gave me the basic tools and signed me up for a few classes. After that, I was hooked!
How long have you been in the business?
I have been doing cakes for 13 years.
What is your favorite part about being a baker?
Being able to create art that you can eat.
What is your not so favorite thing about being a baker?
The long hours that go into each cake, it can be very taxing. I don’t think very many people truly understand the work that goes into a cake.
Where is your bakery located and do you encourage walk-ins or appointments?
I run my cake shoppe from my home. This lets me set my own schedule and be able to stay home with all 6 of our kids.
What is the bulk of your business? Weddings, birthdays, anniversaries? Etc.
The bulk of my business is Wedding cakes and custom cupcakes. Although, I do enjoy creating unique birthday cakes as well.
What are the steps you take to get a good grasp on what your client is looking for?
I make sure to ask lots of questions about their big day to get a feel of the the vision they are trying to create. I also love when brides put together an inspiration sheet with photos of their ideas for the wedding.
What is the most unique request you have received from a client?
My most unique request lately was to do a Zombie wedding cake. I had a lot of fun with this one, but it was sure hard to destroy a beautiful cake.
What was your favorite project so far?
My favorite cake would have to be designing my own wedding cake in 2014. It was a labor of love, for sure!
Do you prefer fondant or buttercream?
I really love working with both! I love the versatility I have with fondant, but my buttercream is what people come back over and over for.
What is your favorite flavor combination?
Chocolate Salted Caramel is my favorite, and is one of our biggest sellers.
Is there a challenging project you’ve brainstormed but haven’t conquered just yet?
I have lots of elaborate ideas for weddings cake I am dying to do, I just need to find the right bride for them.
